Anxiety, OCD & Phobia Therapy at State of Mind Therapy

State of Mind Therapy is a specialized mental health practice based in Bloomington, Minnesota, providing evidence-based therapy for anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and specific phobias.

Our therapists primarily work with adults experiencing persistent worry, intrusive thoughts, rumination, panic attacks, reassurance-seeking, and avoidance. We help clients understand the patterns maintaining their anxiety and develop more effective ways of responding to difficult thoughts, feelings, and uncertainty.

We offer individual therapy in person and online, depending on the clinician and the client's location. We also provide educational workshops, courses, and resources for people experiencing fear of flying.

Who We Commonly Work With

We specialize in helping people experiencing:

  • Anxiety disorders: Generalized anxiety, social anxiety, health anxiety, panic disorder, and agoraphobia.

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD): Intrusive thoughts, mental compulsions, rumination, checking, reassurance-seeking, and other compulsive behaviors.

  • Emetophobia: Fear of vomiting, nausea, illness, or encountering others who are sick.

  • Fear of flying: Anxiety about turbulence, aviation safety, panic during flights, loss of control, or feeling trapped.

  • Other specific phobias: Including claustrophobia and fears related to needles, injections, or medical procedures.

Many of our clients recognize that their fears may be disproportionate to the actual risk but still find themselves caught in cycles of overthinking, avoidance, and attempts to feel certain or in control.

We primarily serve adults, although some clinicians also work with adolescents and younger children depending on their age and presenting concerns.

Our Specialties and Treatment Approaches

Our clinicians use evidence-based approaches selected according to each client's needs and the therapist's training.

Anxiety Therapy

We provide treatment for generalized anxiety, health anxiety, social anxiety, panic attacks, panic disorder, and agoraphobia. Therapy focuses on addressing patterns of worry, avoidance, and behaviors that unintentionally maintain anxiety.

OCD Therapy

We specialize in treating OCD, including intrusive thoughts, rumination, checking, reassurance-seeking, and mental compulsions.

All three clinicians provide Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), a specialized treatment for OCD. Jenny Matthews also offers Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT), which addresses the reasoning processes underlying obsessional doubt.

Emetophobia Therapy and Support Group

We provide specialized treatment for emetophobia (fear of vomiting), including fears of nausea, illness, vomiting, or witnessing someone else become sick.

Treatment may address avoidance, excessive monitoring of bodily sensations, reassurance-seeking, and other behaviors that maintain the fear.

In addition to individual therapy, State of Mind Therapy offers an emetophobia support group for women. The group provides an opportunity to connect with others who understand the experience of living with emetophobia and explore ways to navigate fear and avoidance.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): Developing psychological flexibility and taking meaningful action even when difficult thoughts and feelings are present.

  • Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT): An approach to OCD treatment focused on obsessional doubt and the reasoning processes that contribute to it. Offered by Jenny Matthews.

Individual Therapy and Family Involvement

State of Mind Therapy primarily provides individual psychotherapy.

When clinically appropriate, we may involve parents, partners, or other family members in occasional sessions to help them understand anxiety or OCD and learn how to support their loved one's treatment.

We do not provide ongoing couples or family therapy as a primary service.

When Our Practice May Be a Good Fit

State of Mind Therapy may be a good fit if you:

  • Are seeking specialized treatment for anxiety, OCD, or specific phobias.

  • Experience recurring patterns of overthinking, rumination, reassurance-seeking, or avoidance.

  • Want to understand what's keeping you stuck and learn how to respond differently.

  • Are interested in an active, collaborative approach to therapy that includes practicing skills outside of sessions.

  • Want to build confidence in your ability to handle uncertainty and discomfort rather than relying exclusively on strategies to eliminate anxiety.

You do not need to feel ready or confident about every part of treatment before reaching out. We work collaboratively with clients to determine an appropriate starting point.

When Our Practice May Not Be the Best Fit

Although our therapists may address related concerns such as depression, trauma, or relationship difficulties, our primary clinical focus is anxiety, OCD, and specific phobias.

Our practice may not be the best fit for individuals who:

  • Need immediate crisis intervention or a higher level of care. We provide outpatient psychotherapy rather than emergency or intensive psychiatric services.

  • Are primarily seeking treatment for an active substance use disorder. We generally recommend specialized addiction treatment when substance use is the primary concern.

  • Need psychiatric medication management. Our clinicians provide psychotherapy but do not prescribe or manage medications.

  • Need ongoing couples or family therapy. We may involve family members in individual treatment but do not offer ongoing couples or family therapy as a primary service.

  • Require treatment outside our clinicians' areas of expertise. We assess each inquiry individually and may recommend another provider when appropriate.

If you're unsure whether your concerns are a good fit for our practice, you're welcome to contact us to discuss your needs.

Fees and Insurance

State of Mind Therapy is a private-pay, out-of-network practice. We do not participate as an in-network provider with commercial insurance plans, and clients pay the full session fee at the time of service.

Depending on their plan, clients may be eligible for reimbursement through out-of-network mental health benefits.

We partner with Mentaya to help clients check their benefits, submit out-of-network claims, and navigate reimbursement.

Because we provide specialized treatment, we also help clients explore whether they may qualify for a single-case agreement or network gap exception. These arrangements may offer access to in-network benefit levels when appropriate specialized treatment is not available through an insurance network. Approval is determined by the insurance company and is not guaranteed.

We offer a free guide to help people understand how to request a network gap exception and advocate for coverage.
