Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Minneapolis, MN

Anxiety can be overwhelming. The thoughts and feelings feel like they will never end. You want to have the ability to control your thoughts and be able to relax. You don’t want to keep avoiding the things you are afraid of. Maybe you have done traditional talk therapy and didn’t get results. You’ve probably heard of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (also known as CBT). This kind of therapy is not your typical “talk therapy”. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy has been well-established by research to be the most effective treatment option for anxiety disorders like Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Social Anxiety Disorder, Phobias, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, and more.

What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?

CBT is a highly effective treatment approach that helps you understand the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This therapy is unique in that you won’t just come into session and “talk” while expecting to feel better. CBT is goal oriented and hands-on. You can think of me more as a coach to help you problem solve better ways of managing anxiety.

How does CBT work?

Once we’ve completed your assessment and identified goals for treatment, you can expect me to spend some time providing education on the nature of anxiety. Many of my clients feel a sense of relief just understanding how anxiety works. After that, we will start to work on increasing your awareness of how your thoughts impact your emotions and behavior. You will be expected to complete worksheets, reading assignments, or other exercises in-between sessions to increase your learning.

How does CBT help?

The goal in CBT is help you develop practical coping strategies. The “homework” in between sessions is meant to keep you track with your goals and practice skills you learned in session. Because the treatment is goal-oriented, it is generally completed in a short-term manner. You can expect to see benefit from the treatment within 12-15 sessions. And these skills can be used for a lifetime, which saves you time and money!
